No Regrets… Right??!
Regret. It’s a word that weighs heavily on our shoulders, like cumbersome baggage that you’re dragging through a busy airport through a string of cancelled flights. I see the word used a lot on GirlsAskGuys, and couldn’t help but think….what do I regret?
Even as I write this header, I think about Henry David Thoreau’s quote, “Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.” Hindsight is 20/20, and it’s easy to think about the past and say, “coulda, woulda, shoulda….” For example, we have a contest running right now – What Is Your Biggest High School Or College Regret?, and I think about what I might have done if I was 16 with a 35-year-old brain. I would have studied harder, probably would have chosen a different major, and definitely would have taken a few more chances. But that’s not the way life is. And I’m OK with that. I may not have ended up where I had planned, but I’m definitely right where I’m supposed to be.
And so, rather than lament over the lost opportunities or wrong decisions, I think about what I want, starting today. One user makes an important point about seizing the day, asking, If you found out you were going to die tomorrow, would you have any regrets? This is a great question to get our minds turning, reminding us all to carpe diem! Whatever your answer may be, write it down and do it. Start tackling that bucket list, one action item at a time, no matter how small or large the list may be.
“Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.”
― Arthur Miller
