Internet Safety Tips

I know what you’re thinking….
*Yawn* …I’ve been using the internet my entire life, and I don’t need a bunch of safety tips. Don’t take candy from strangers. Yeah. Got it. Thanks.
BUT. Internet safety isn’t about a bunch of rules telling you not to talk to strangers or trying to scare you into safe behavior. Internet safety is about avoiding the dangers of being ripped off, disrespected, bullied, scammed, or stalked while you’re just trying to have a good time online!
Protecting Yourself
Always be very careful about how much information you are posting online! Too much information can lead to harassment, fraud, or worse. Avoid giving out your full name, your mailing address, your email address, your telephone number, the name of your school, or any other information that could help someone determine your actual identity. For more tools and resources about what you should and shouldn’t be posting online, visit Get Netwise.
Identity Theft
Just because you’re a teen and may not have a loaded bank account, it doesn’t mean you’re not at risk for identity theft. A criminal is not likely to steal anything from your bank account – what they’re interested in is getting a $30,000 loan using your identity! NEVER give out bank account, social security, or credit card information to anyone. For more information on avoiding teen identity theft, visit Qwest.
Cyber Bullying
Cyber bullying includes, but is not limited to, the posting of derogatory remarks, impersonation, and the sending of offensive, rude or insulting comments to an individual. It’s serious business, and it’s illegal. For more information on how to prevent and deal with cyber bullying, visit Cyber Bullying.
